Iowa Roadside Programs

This presentation will describe how Iowa’s county roadside vegetation managers maintain roadside vegetation using an integrated, ecological approach. Their management of thousands of acres of public right-of-way can reduce soil erosion, improve safety, increase biodiversity, and improve water quality.

About the Speaker

Kristine Nemec manages the Iowa Roadside Management program at the University of Northern Iowa Tallgrass Prairie Center, supporting Iowa’s county roadside vegetation programs and conducting outreach. Previously she worked as a restoration ecologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Nebraska and as a research entomologist with the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service in South Dakota. She received a B.S. in Environmental Studies and an M.A. in Biology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a Ph.D. in Natural Resource Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
